Fore!

Updated: Aug 19

On an unusually windy and chilly evening for mid-August, Shine performed for the Captain's Charity Day event at Churston Golf Club, Galmpton on Saturday 16th August 2025. With the kind of weather optimism that only the British can conjour up when facing adverse conditions, we set ourselves up under two gazebos, facing the clubhouse, wondering if they and our instruments would still be standing by the end of the gig! However, with much battening down and lots of clothes pegs gripping our gripping music, off we went, starting with our all time favourite Thriller, which we appropriately renamed Chiller.

Our audience was fantastic though, at first it was the hardy and cheery four, braving the wind and entering our banter with spirit, well actually I think they were drinking lager. But soon many others ventured out onto the patio to join in the fun and face the Force 10 gusts. Hats off to all the ladies and gents of the club who watched and listened to us play whilst concealing their shivers under a beautiful array of brightly coloured, Caribbean shirts, dresses and other amazing apparel. There were even a couple of Bob Marley look-a-likes!

During the interval a decision was made to move us inside, in the interests of warmth and a more stable and less blowy atmosphere. So, it was lift and shift and off into the clubhouse we went. When the prize giving was over, we kicked off, or shoud I say Tee'd Off, with our second half and some Red Red Wine as everyone seemed to be drinking it, This felt much more comfortable, things were much warmer and calmer albeit, a little louder. Of course, we treated them all to our rogue piece Paranoid. Well, if you're going to be noisy you might as well be really noisy, but they loved it!

Soon it was time to pack away and make way for the next reggae band who kindly waited patiently at the side whilst we whizzed through our finale pieces of Shine, Gangsters and Lip Up Fatty. Why, because we love them and by this time we had a few ardent dancers swinging their pants instead of their golf clubs on the dance floor!

Thank you to Barry the Chairman who helped us throughout the evening and to everyone at the Golf Club who braved the winds and our loud presence. It was lovely to meet you all and an absolute pleasure to perform for you. We hope to be back with you one day soon.
