The Steel Band

Learning

Shine is a fun way of learning to play music using our wonderful 'world' percussion musical instruments. Our team of highly experienced and qualified music teachers will guide you on your exciting musical journey.

It doesn't matter if you've never played nor read music before, we'll explain everything in slow time whilst making the sessions fun, engaging and exciting. Our sessions are structured in an 'easy to understand' yet progressive programme where you won't feel left behind, nor overloaded by complicated and technical pages of sheet music.

We'll need you to commit just 90 mins of your time each Wednesday evening to learn to play your instrument and to learn the repertoire.  So regular attendance is a must! Playing in a Steel Band is all about team spirit and teams work best when they support one another and come together as one.

Our ethos is 'keep it simple' and 'keep it fun'! After each session we guarantee you'll go away buzzing and probably singing to yourself too!

Playing

During our sessions you'll learn how to play and perform music using our full set of steel pans and percussion musical instruments. It's challenging, interesting, sociable, rewarding, enjoyable and fulfilling but most of all, it's fun!

You need to be team-spirited, motivated, dedicated and to have the desire to learn to play music confidently.

Those who wish to take things even further can learn to play up to performance level and even do the odd gig or two!

Performing

The Band performs at a number of engagements throughout the calendar year including the

Torbay Airshow, Bay of Lights, Churston Golf Club, Workshops and private events including weddings, parties and shows.

Shine's repertoire includes well known Reggae and Ska sounds including, Red Red Wine, Jamming, Monkey Man, Cherry Oh Baby, Three Little Birds, Lip Up Fatty, Gangsters and of course our signature tune, Shine! Our arrangements are unique and follow the originals pieces as closely as possible using our amazing steel drums (pans).
