Meet Our Band Leaders

Learning. Playing. Performing.

Phil Hayward and Rose Sage are the Band Leaders and Music Educators at Shine. Our ethos is very much that Shine is here for everyone to enjoy, whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced musician. Our aim is to help you to discover your hidden musical talents whilst having a fun time learning, playing and performing.

Phil Hayward CMETCL

I've lived in Dartmouth since 1991. Drafted to the Royal Marines Band at Britannia Royal Naval College (BRNC) as the Band's Drum Major,  I fell in love with the place so decided to stay. I'm an experienced musician and play Solo trumpet in the BRNC Concert Band and I have taught music as a peripatetic music educator at local schools. Together with Rose, we restarted the steel band at the  Dartmouth Academy which ultimately lead to Shine being established in the town. I bring a wealth of experience with me from playing professionally in the Corps of Drums aboard HM Royal Yacht Britannia to performing in and leading amateur bands and small ensembles for the BRNC Concert Band.  I look forward to sharing the joy of learning to play and perform music with Shine.

Rose Sage - Project Leader

Rose Sage BA (Hons), MEd, PGCE, Dip ABRSM

I arrived at Dartington College of Arts in 1984 and decided there was no better place to be than in the South Hams. As both a teacher and performer I have performed as a soloist, orchestral and band musician and led many music ensembles, from concert hall to night club and everything in between. Playing steel pans is high up on my list of favourite fun musical activities and I look forward to introducing the Shine reggae experience to you all!
